Monastery Stables - Reconnect with the Nature

Come Visit Us!

For nearly 300 years, horses have called this place home.

Today, Monastery Stables & Community Grounds is six acres of working stables, historic buildings, and open space in the heart of Philadelphia. Nestled beside the Wissahickon, it's a place where people gather, children meet horses for the first time, neighbors connect, and the city's pace gives way to something older and more grounded.

A living piece of Philadelphia's history, cared for by the community and open to all.

Our Why

We believe horses, open land, beauty, history, and connection shouldn't be reserved for the few.

Monastery Stables & Community Grounds exists to keep this place exactly what it is — open, rooted, and alive — for everyone who comes here.

This place belongs to all of us.

Our History

The Monastery Mansion was built in 1747 by Joseph Gorgas, of Wissahickon schist quarried from the land itself. Since then, this place has been a working farm, a community gathering ground, and a home for horses — a quiet constant through centuries of a changing city.
