We thank the many neighbors and friends of the Monastery complex of historic buildings and grounds in the Wissahickon Valley Park, who donated over $15,000 in 2015, helping the Boarders and Stewards of the Monastery (BSM) make improvements to the historic buildings and grounds of the Monastery complex. Roof, chimney, gutter and downspout repairs, along with new carpentry and painting, were accomplished in 2015, along with many volunteer hours spent on grounds and building maintenance and improvements.
In 2016 the upper part of the barn trim was painted by professional painters, and the lower part was painted by volunteers, including riders from the barn and Friends of the Wissahickon volunteers. This volunteer work saved $5000 that can be used for other improvements to the site. The barn trim was painted iron oxide red, the color farmers usually painted their 18th-century barns.
After a mortar analysis by historic preservation conservators, the west side of the barn was re-pointed, first removing old, clunky, mis-matching repairs that endangered the historic stone structure.
Improvements were made to the surface of the horse paddocks. Attention was given to proper drainage. Unsafe trees were removed and new indigenous species were planted.
For 2017 we have more on our agenda to keep the historic buildings functional, contributing to their long-term survival.
The Monastery complex is a Fairmount Park property with an 18th-century stone stable, and a former millworker’s cottage with its springhouse and small barn. BSM holds the lease on the Monastery property, and we are responsible for maintaining the facilities and grounds on behalf of the Fairmount Park Conservancy. BSM pays for the utilities, an outdoor toilet facility, and makes capital improvements such as roofing, masonry, plumbing, fencing, and ground maintenance, and is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation.
BSM plans to undertake roof work, the repointing of the remaining three facades of the barn, ring/paddock resurfacing work, painting barn trim, trimming storm damaged trees, and more for a total of $19,800.
Can you help get this accomplished? We hope you will join us and make a gift towards our goal to help us preserve and improve the Monastery property. It is only through the generosity of friends and neighbors that this special complex can be preserved for future generations of park users.
