We thank the many friends and neighbors of the Monastery complex in the Wissahickon Valley
Park who donated over $18,700 in 2017. This generosity helped the Boarders and Stewards of the Monastery (BSM) make improvements to our historic buildings and grounds, and to continue the tradition of riding and driving horses along the Wissahickon Creek.

The Monastery complex is a Fairmount Park property along the Wissahickon Creek, with an 18th - century stone house, barn, and a former millworker’s cottage with its springhouse and small stable. These buildings are a vivid reminder of our 18th- and 19th- century past, while serving modern uses as the site of one of the few horse facilities within the City of Philadelphia. The Monastery Stables is home to 22 horses and one donkey; headquarters for the Philadelphia Saddle Club; and a place where the public is welcomed to participate in programs about horsemanship. The Monastery property is open to the public for walking and jogging, enjoying the scenery, and for city kids to pet a horse for the first time.

What’s new at the Monastery property? The small barn on Kitchens Lane now houses a flock of thriving sheep. A colorful wildflower garden was planted - a clever way to keep the lawnmowers off the berm - part of our storm water management program, at the same time adding to the beauty of the site. We repaired the barn roof and stucco walls, re-pointed its south wall, painted the exterior, resurfaced the arena, and did repairs on the millworker’s cottage.

For 2018, we have more work to do to maintain the facilities and grounds on behalf of the Fairmount Park Conservancy. We plan to undertake the re-pointing of the north facade of the main barn, carpentry work, repairs to the millworker’s cottage and sheep barn on Kitchens Lane, storm water management, paddock resurfacing, round pen fencing, and other improvements for a total of $22,000. Additionally, we must pay for the utilities, an outdoor toilet facility, and fire prevention. Already this year, several donors have jump-started our 2018 campaign by giving a total of $6,500.

Would you consider aiding us in our goal? We suggest a gift of $100 or more, but any donation is greatly appreciated. We hope you will join us to help us accomplish the preservation and improvement of the Monastery property. It is only through the generosity of friends and neighbors that this special area can be preserved for future generations of park users.
